Keep Cool at the Coolest San Diego Beaches

Monday July 13, 2009
Man, it's been hot lately. After a pretty cool summer so far, the heat has hit San Diego full force. But it is July, after all, which means prime beach going weather. But where to go when you want to keep cool and maybe be among the cool crowd, too? Well, that depends on what might constitute "cool."

Does a cool beach mean a great spot for surfing? Or someplace more family friendly? Or a place to show off your body? Luckily, the San Diego coastline has a beach to suit everyone's tastes. And each one has its own special traits to make it a favorite of someone out there.

So here's a list of some of San Diego's favorite beaches - more representative than comprehensive. Did I miss one out there? Then feel free to let me know!

It's @!#$% Over-The-Line Time Again

Friday July 10, 2009
Courtesy of OMBACBats, balls, beer, and babes - well, maybe its reputation precedes it. But the OMBAC World Championship Over-The-Line Tournament on Fiesta Island is, in its over 50 rowdy years, an event unique to San Diego. This modified game of softball might attract teams that merely want to flaunt an outrageous name (which we can't print here), but it also attracts some serious OTL players. And if you can see past the haze of beer and politically incorrectness, you'll see that OTL is a pretty cool sport. Besides, OMBAC (the Old Mission Beach Athletic Club) donates all proceeds to charity. The OTL Championships runs over two weekends: July 11-12 and 18-19. Read my profile on Over-The-Line here.

Let's see, in the coming week or two we have the opening of the Del Mar Races, the concluding weekend of the Over-The-Line tournament, the massive Comic-Con International, and the San Diego Gay Pride Parade and Festival. Man, if you still can't find something to do in July here in San Diego, then I don't know what to tell you! This two day Pride Festival in Balboa Park has become one of California's premier Pride events, and is San Diego's largest civic event, and this year's main events, the annual parade and festival in Balboa Park, take place July 18-19. Michael Jackson's San Diego Connection: 'Blanket' Born at Grossmont Hospital?

Thursday July 2, 2009
So, the King of Pop is dead and only time will reveal the strange story that was Michael Jackson's final years. And, of course, in the aftermath of his untimely death, a few San Diego connections have surfaced. Most have been somewhat trivial - places Jackson had visited, people who met him, etc. But there is one San Diego County connection that is quite intriguing.

Apparently, Jackson's youngest child, Prince Michael Jackson II, was born at Grossmont Hospital in La Mesa. As reported by NBC 7/39, the boy's (nicknamed "Blanket" by his father) birth certificate is recorded at the San Diego County's Assessor/Recorder's office. According to that document, the 7-year-old was born Feb. 21, 2002, and his father is listed as Michael Joseph Jackson, born in Indiana on Aug. 29, 1958.

The name of the mother, believed to be a surrogate, was left blank on the certificate, with other information redacted. Prince Michael gained infamy when he was an infant when father Michael dangled him dangerously over a balcony rail in a German hotel, causing a media uproar. Read about this Michael Jackson news and watch the infamous video on the NBC 7/39 website.
