In San Diego, there's one thing a warm summer evening is conducive to, and that's taking in a movie at a
drive-in theater. But you better head to one quickly, because the venerable drive-in looks like it's headed the way of the dinosaur, at least in San Diego County. Which is ironic, here in the land of the automobile. But real estate out here is so dang expensive and lucrative, that I suppose we'd rather see yet another shopping center and cookie cutter beige homes with fake Spanish tile than to hang on to one of our last vestiges of our youth.
Believe it or not, San Diego has but two drive-ins remaining: the Santee and the South Bay. Just 20 years ago, we had a slew of them in the city proper, some of them just shouting distance from one another (remember the Frontier and Midway?). Find out about some of those not-so-forgotten San Diego drive-ins, some of them with pictures to stir up memories. Share your San Diego drive-in memories in our FORUM.
UPDATE: Read a recent CNN report on the state of drive-ins.
