Seabiscuit Is A Sure Bet

Monday August 4, 2003
The timing of the release of the movie SEABISCUIT couldn't be more perfect with the 64th season of the Del Mar Thoroughbred racing season. Not only because of the incredible horse racing story depicted in Laura Hillenbrand's vivid book and the fine movie adaptation, but also by the fact that Seabiscuit actually has a Del Mar connection: he raced at the track during its second season. And he won, of course.

All this is a precursor to me saying that I recently saw the movie Seabiscuit starring Tobey Maguire, Jeff Bridges and Chris Cooper, and I must say that director Gary Ross has crafted a fine adaptation of Hillenbrand's best-seller. The film not only tells the moving story of how three broken men are brought together by a broken horse, but also how together they brought together and lifted a broken nation. It is a heartwarming and uplifting movie of the past that still resonates today. And it is guaranteed to bring tears to even the most hardened cowboy. The best movie this year.
