Local news icon Neil Morgan fired from Union-Tribune
Thursday April 1, 2004
In a puzzling move to even its own staff, the Union-Tribune fired longtime newsman Neil Morgan. The 80-year-old veteran editor and columnist was a moderate and sometimes liberal voice and fixture in San Diego news for 54 years and helmed the Evening Tribune before its merger with the San Diego Union in 1992. Under Morgan's command, the feisty Tribune won a Pulitzer Prize. There is an apparent dispute as to whether Morgan was fired - as he said in a news conference. The newspaper refuses to give a reason. As dozens of stunned co-workers watched him depart, Morgan said, to a standing ovation, "I love you all." It's truly the end of an era in San Diego journalism. Wow, I’ve been out of the loop. I didn’t know Neil had even left the paper. I started as a copy boy on the old Evening Tribune in 1960. Neil, then, wrote a column, “My San Diego.” He was the fastest typer I’ve ever known. He was a gentleman then and someone I
really looked up to.
