Viva! Cinco de Mayo

Wednesday May 5, 2004
You know, especially with our border locale, there are a lot of misconceptions around the celebration of Cinco de Mayo. For one, it is *not* Mexico's Independence Day, but rather a commemoration of the Battle of Puebla. Even more important, it is not merely an invention of distillers as an excuse to drink alcohol (although America seems to do that to all holidays nowadays, ie St. Patrick's Day, Halloween). Even more telling, Cinco de Mayo isn't really that big of a deal in Mexico - it's mostly a regional thing. Read more about the History of Cinco de Mayo from MexOnline.com.
