Draft Day: Chargers Beef Up Defense
Saturday April 23, 2005
With two No. 1 picks to use in the 2005 NFL Draft, the San Diego Chargers used both of them to beef up an already much-improved 2004 squad: Maryland's Shawne Merriman (12th pick), a defensive end; and Northwestern's Luis Castillo (28th pick), a defensive tackle. Both players came into the draft highly regarded. San Diego native and Helix High grad Alex Smith was the Number 1 pick overall, when the Utah quarterback was chosen by the San Francisco 49ers. Smith is the first-ever San Diego product chosen as the NFL's number one pick. For more draft day news, go to the official site of the San Diego Chargers.
