San Diego Trolley Green Line Opens This Weekend, Free Rides On Saturday 7/9
Thursday July 7, 2005
Frankly, I never thought I'd see the day: a subway station in San Diego. You see, I equate subways as a necessity of big city life: New York, Chicago, Boston, Washington DC, San Francisco. Heck, even Los Angeles has a (much-maligned) subway line, and Seattle has a subway for its busses. But with the opening of the San Diego Trolley's new Green Line, which finally connects Mission Valley to its East County terminus in Santee, passengers will get a taste of what a subway is all about with the subterranean station underneath the SDSU campus. The Green Line officially opens July 10, but on Saturday, July 9, between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., you'll be able to ride free from Qualcomm Stadium to Santee and experience all four new stations - Grantville, SDSU, Alvarado Medical Center, and 70th Street. Each of the new stops will have festivities and you can meet the artists who worked on each station. Sure, the stretch underneath SDSU is the only part of the trolley that qualifies as a true subway, but for that portion, we can at least pretend we're big city urban public transit commuters.
