Swimming With Sharks
Friday August 26, 2005
Each summer around this time of the year, San Diego beaches are graced with a very cool marine phenomenon: the shallow waters are invaded by dozens of sharks. Now, before you scream "Jaws!", let me qualify this by saying the waters are teeming with gentle leopard sharks, not the maneating great white shark, or any of those sort. In fact, the leopard sharks are so gentle that you can actually wade and swim among them - if you don't bother them, they won't bother you. Besides, the leopard sharks feed on stuff like clams and worms and shrimp. The leopard sharks congregate primarily in the shallow, protected beach off La Jolla Shores, while the water is fairly warm. See for yourself and swim among the sharks - if you dare. For more info about leopard sharks, see the San Diego Natural History website.
Several snorkeling and kayak tours are available, including one offered by Hike Bike and Kayak San Diego.
