Record Bass Caught in San Diego County - Controversy Follows
Saturday March 25, 2006
In what could be considered a fisherman's dream and nightmare, a record-setting largemouth bass was caught at Dixon Lake on Monday, March 20. The monster fish, caught by Mac Weakley of Carlsbad, tipped the scales at 25.1 pounds, eclipsing a bass record that has stood for 74 years. But will it? As with many record catches, this fish tale isn't without its own controversy. The fish was "foul hooked" by Weakley, meaning it wasn't hooked in the mouth. After weighing and releasing the bass, Weakley has apparently decided not to submit the catch for certification, feeling the foul-hook wouldn't stand. Nevertheless, the fishing world is abuzz with this catch, and our tiny Dixon Lake in North County could become the mecca for bass masters.
