San Diego Taco Tips: MyBertos Helps You Find "YourBertos"

Monday April 21, 2008
Tacos, ahhh, tacos. With San Diego being a border city, it's no wonder that Mexican food is such an ingrained way of life for most San Diegans. Mexican food is a staple diet of most of us (or at least a couple of days a week), and the taco is the sustenance; the king of all Mexican food. Well, at least to me.

Now, I'm not talking Taco Bell -- that's like saying a spaghetti dinner made with Ragu sauce is Italian food. No, we're talking real Mexican tacos, preferably from one of the many colorful drive thru "shacks" and strip mall storefronts ubiquitous to San Diego. And if you can't choose which one to try, any "'berto's" outlet will do: Roberto's, Royberto's, Alberto's, Aliberto's, Gilberto's. Me, my preferred taco temple is Citlalli (formerly El Compadre) on University Avenue in La Mesa, in front of Helix High School.

But here in San Diego, everyone has their favorite taco shack - no different than everyone having a favorite pizza joint or hamburger shop. And the beauty of living in San Diego, so close to Mexico, is that when you have a craving for tacos at any time of the day, you can find a taco shop within a few blocks of your hunger pangs. Don't believe me? Well check out this local site, MyBertos.com, which is an online San Diego taco shop finder. Its name is an homage to all the "'berto's" taco shops that abound in San Diego.

Entering my zip code, MyBertos.com came up with a result of 25 fast-food taco shops within a 5-mile radius. Like I said, San Diegans love their taco shops. To test yourself, next time you're traveling in, say, the Midwest and get a craving for tacos at midnight, try finding an all-night taco stand. Yep, I thought so.
