Local Food Banks See a Rising Demand
Wednesday August 6, 2008
In probably the most explicit indicator of how the rough economy is affecting people, local food banks are seeing a steady rise in demand for supplemental food resources. According to an article in the San Diego Union-Tribune, the San Diego Food Bank has seen an increased need for their resources, and it is creating a strain on the ability to provide for those in need. In the first quarter for 2008, the Food Bank has seen a 102 percent in crease in need in La Mesa, 69 percent in Spring Valley, 34 percent in Chula Vista, 26 percent in Oceanside, and 25 percent in San Diego. With the increased need for food, the organization stated that it needs to start building its inventory fast to meet the demand.
