Hidden San Diego: The Footbridges of Hillcrest and Banker's Hill
Monday August 25, 2008
San Diego's unique terrain, especially within the urban core, lends its neighborhoods to some unique characteristics. Often, these little quirks are only known to those who live near them and have experienced them. One of the oldest finds are the footbridges around the Hillcrest/Banker's Hill/Balboa Park area of the city. A necessity way back in the early 20th century, they were built to link neighborhoods that were bisected by the steep finger canyons that dot the city.
You would only come across them if you live in one of these neighborhood, and the old footbridges of Hillcrest and Banker's Hill give these neighborhoods a unique and special character. Thankfully, they've been preserved and restored so we can still use them - it's what makes San Diego's urban neighborhoods so pedestrian friendly and colorful. Learn how you can discover San Diego's footbridges as part of my Hidden San Diego series.
