Labor Day To-Do: Old Town Grape Stomp, Aug. 30 - Sept. 1

Friday August 29, 2008
It is a classic comedic scene that forever lives in television reruns: Lucille Ball, trying to absorb the local Italian color, sets out to stomp grapes for wine so she can lend some authenticity to a movie part she is offered. Well, as only Lucy can, the activity turns into chaos and as memorable scene as any ever on TV. So, that's what I think of when I hear about grape stomping to make wine. Not that many wineries do stomping with feet anymore.

But the past does come alive this weekend when Hacienda de Las Rosas Winery & Tasting Room & Plaza del Pasado hosts the first annual Old Town Grape Stomp. The event benefits the Warrior Foundation, helping local wounded & disabled military heroes. A romping, stomping good time, admission includes a souvenir wine glass, live entertainment, appetizers and (2) glasses of wine. Jump in with both feet and make some vino in the grape stomping competitions - or try it just for fun.

Tickets are $30 and the event takes place Aug. 30, 31 and Sept.1, from noon to 6 p.m. at the Plaza del Pasado Courtyard, just inside the Juan Street entrance, Old Town San Diego State Historic Park. Advance ticket purchase available at the Plaza del Pasado shops and Hacienda de Las Rosas Tasting Room.
