Update: Street Scene Headliner Black Crowes Cancel, DEVO is Replacement

Wednesday September 17, 2008
UPDATE: DEVO has been confirmed to replace the Black Crowes as Saturday headliners. Didn't DEVO just play the Del Mar Races last month - for free? Hmmmm....

In what might be a sign that its future is on shaky ground or just more bad luck, Street Scene's much ballyhooed return to its downtown roots took a big hit just days before the event when Saturday headliners the Black Crowes canceled due to band illness. The suddenly canceled five performances this week, include its headline slot at Street Scene.

According to the Union-Tribune, event producer Rob Hagey is trying to fill the Saturday spot with another national act. Some may say that the Crowes were a less-than-stellar headline choice (Beck is headlining on Friday), so maybe it won't be so hard to find a replacement. In any case, it appears to be yet another stumble in the event's attempt to re-discover its glory and relevance.

Do you think Street Scene should just pack it in after this week? Feel free to comment.

Not the first time this has happened to a festival. Happens all the time and Street Scene was not the only show they canceled.
I was at a show in Milwaukee in the 80’s where Lou Reed was supposed to be the headliner but broke his arm. They moved the second to the last band Elvis Costello and the Attractions up to Headliner and brought in a new band with there first album out to play second to last called the Violent Femmes.
It is an opportunity for something special.

Also My Morning Jacket has the night off and is playing in Los Angeles on Sunday night.

Just and idea for something special.

So Black Crowes aren’t playing…big deal. I know there are plenty of people who were looking forward to seeing them live, but as far as their starpower goes, it shouldn’t be too terribly difficult to find someone on the same level.

While I’m at it, let me take this time to note that while there seems to be a consensus regarding the lameness of hosting the festival at Qualcomm, the lineups for the two years they were there were amazing, not to mention, you could make it from one end to the other without having to walk on top of 5,000 people to do so. Does anyone remember AFI? The Killers? Tool? All names, which in my opinion, were much more exciting than the Black Crowes.

I’m not trying to discredit the Black Crowes…nothing but mad respect for them. Nor am I trying to discredit the decision to move it back downtown. What I am trying to do, is point out that Street Scene is not on a downward spiral , so I’m finding it very odd that people feel like they the festival needs to “rediscover their glory and relevance”, besides the mishap of last year, when have they ever lost it?

My Morning Jacket already has a date in San Diego so not likely.

I think maybe G Love and the Special Sauce which is a Street scene veteran. They do not have any So. Cal shows now because they were opening for the Crowes on other dates.

I would not mind.

Rob needs to prove himself and this may be his opportunity. Call it a blessing in disguise, but the Black Crows aren’t that Hard to Handle any more…In fact; I’m handling their last minute pull-out very well. Let’s see if Rob put’s his big boy pants on and finds a comparable headliner to Beck and Justice…Can you say Daft Punk?!? Maybe Fatboy Slim…Kings of Leon!

G Love is way too easy. I could get them to play a backyard party or a chili cook-off…G Love doesn’t hold a hat to Friday’s lineup. Think deep ROB - White Stripes deep.

Good Luck. We’re counting on you to pull this off. Don’t F this up.

Black Crowes were perfect festival material, I say it’s Tim Mays who needs to step up and use his many favors, call ‘em in man!
Friday night’s lineup is still one of the best lineups I’ve ever seen.

bummer. i was just thinking of going to the (lame) Street Scence venue to see the Black Crowes. They are awesome. They and 311 played one night several years ago … 5 or 6? … the last time i actually enjoyed a street scene! oh well. maybe next year.

DEVO confirmed to replace Black Crowes.

They must have cancelled their Iowa City Livestock Convention gig to make room to HEADLINE the closing night of San Diego Street Scene!

Dissapointment at best.

(9) Austin says:

Devo was just announced as the replacement band for the Black Crows.

Help me with this. DEVO?!? Am i missing something? Whip it? Into Shape? Shape it up? Get Straight? GET REAL. Get a better fu*king band!

STEET SCENE HAS OFFICALLY BEEN DESTROYED!!!

This is what happens when you put a great Venue into the hands of weak, over rated, small black-book promoter and expect something great will happen. Since the Black Crows announcement, Rob Hagey has been making calls looking for a “National Replacement Band”. Wow…way to go Rob. I can’t believe you were able to book Devo to play your gig. WTF?!? DEVO? They haven’t charged for a concert since the Taste of Newport 1982.

Way to ruin Street-Scene you Knuckle-Head.

Rob Hagey Productions should be ashamed of their decision. In addition, they should offer refunds for Saturday. Look at the lineup…It doesn’t even compare. Here’ a little SAT question:
Black Crows are to Devo as:
a) Rob Hagey is to a Moron
b) Street Scene is to Weak
c) Whip it is to Sucks
d) All the above

I can’t wait to be rubbing shoulders with 55+ year old divorced mothers and swinging douche bags cheating husbands with mustaches. Yippie…

I’m selling my tickets…if there’s still a market.
