Record-Tying Feat: El Cajon's Jimmie Johnson Wins Third Consecutive NASCAR Championship

Sunday November 16, 2008

The native son entered the NASCAR record books today by winning his third consecutive championship with a solid 15th-place run at the Homestead 400 in Miami, beating Edwards by 69 points to join Cale Yarborough as the only drivers in NASCAR history to win three straight titles.

The 32-year-old Johnson's racing career started in El Cajon on 50cc motorcycles at the age of five. His father, Gary, worked for a tire company and his mother, Cathy, drove a school bus. Johnson and wife, Chandra, promote the Jimmie Johnson Foundation with a variety of public fundraising activities. In March of 2007, the couple opened Jimmie Johnson's Victory Lanes for campers at Kyle and Pattie Petty's Victory Junction Camp in Randleman, N.C. Johnson resides in Charlotte, N.C.
