Chargers Defeat Broncos, 52-21, Miraculously Make Playoffs
Sometimes you gotta believe, even if you don't really believe. And with a 4-8 record with four games to go and three games behind the first-place Denver Broncos, no one but Pollyanna could have given the San Diego Chargers a chance to make the playoffs. But thanks to an historic collapse on Denver's part, the Chargers became the first team in NFL history to make the playoffs after a 4-8 start. They end up with an 8-8 record and the winner of the AFC West division. The Bolts’ emphatic 52-21 victory over the Broncos in front of a record crowd of 69,131 at Qualcomm Stadium capped another undefeated December and set the stage for a meeting between the AFC's two hottest teams when the Indianapolis Colts, winners of nine straight, head to Qualcomm for the first round of the playoffs. The game is on Saturday, Jan. 3 at 5 p.m. It will be broadcast in primetime on NBC. This is the Chargers' third consecutive AFC West title and its most improbable after the disappointing start.
