Be Water-Wise: San Diego Mandatory Water Restrictions Now in Place

Sunday June 7, 2009
After months of hinting of the imminent mandatory water restrictions by the San Diego County Water Authority due to the ongoing drought situation throughout the West, the City of San Diego began implementing what it calls Level 2 restrictions for all city residents.

One of the most visible and impactful restrictions is how we water our lawns and gardens: Landscape irrigation is limited to no more than three assigned days per week from June 1- Oct. 31. Those days are:

o Homes with odd-numbered addresses can water: Sunday, Tuesday & Thursday
o Homes with even-numbered addresses can water: Saturday, Monday & Wednesday
o Apartments, Condos and Businesses can water: Monday, Wednesday & Friday
On your watering day, you may only water before 10 a.m. or after 6 p.m. If you do not live in the City of San Diego, check with your local water district to see what mandatory restrictions are in place - though most will follow the same guidelines as San Diego's.

For more details and info on other mandatory water restrictions, read my article here.

I heard they got rid of “Zookeeper Willie” and replaced him with a new character and lesser copy of him. That’s sad they can just throw someone out that’s been there for years, it must be close to 20 , I can remember seeing him there when I was young. i heard he wanted to come back but was pushed out. Night Zoo will not be the same without him at the San Diego Zoo. Does anyone out there have anymore information?

Gardening is not landscaping and is not subject to these water restrictions. If crop production (since these restrictions are imposed on both business and residential) were a target, we’d be in a whole lot of trouble!

Isn’t it interesting how we’ve been in drought for years, with not enough water to go around in SD, yet our governments still promote endless population growth, which is the root cause for our having less and less water available every day?

GTFO my town non-locals; military, and especially yuppie spawn college kids and retirees. SD can’t support you all and we don’t want you here. Locals Only! Save the quality of life of locals (same applies to most other cities now as well). Endless growth economics are literally killing us all now.

We need water restriction and not just now! (I’m a little confused about how the city is getting the word out: I had to research online to find out about the schedule. Did they mail announcements? Did I somehow think it was junk and throw it away?) There is so much we can personally do to save water. I myself have a long way to go – I am so inspired by those who catch their shower water in a bucket while waiting for the water to get hot. Eventually, I hope we all have grey-water systems.
