The Old House Fair Spotlights the Historic Homes of South Park, June 20

Monday June 15, 2009
San Diego's South Park neighborhood often gets lumped together with its neighbors, Golden Hill and North Park. But though proximity often blurs the actual borders between enclaves, South Park has a flavor and personality of its own. A big part of South Park's personality is its preservation of the original homes in the neighborhood. Many are Victorian or Craftsman homes built in the early 1900s.

Homes like these lend invaluable character to South Park, but their age obviously requires lots of care to restore them to their original glory. The Old House Fair is an annual event that celebrates and honors the heritage of these old homes and it helps to educate other homeowners to find the resources to refurbish and restore their own homes. The 11th annual event takes place on Saturday, June 20 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The Old House Fair features a self-guided home tour, walking tours, half-hour design consultations, live music, children's activities, food vendors, local artists and restoration experts. The fair itself is free, but there self-guided walking tour costs $15. The fair takes place along two blocks at the intersection of Beech St. & 30th St. in South Park and includes: • 70+ Exhibitors, vendors, info booth, food booths.
• Kids’ Corner with free crafts, ceramics, planting projects, and street chalk drawing.
• “Ask The Experts” booth.
• Free design consultations.
• Free seminars presented by SOHO San Diego (Save Our Heritage Organisation) on historic preservation of homes and neighborhoods.
• Free seminars by OurCity: San Diego Magazine on old home renovation.
• Live music stage at Beech & Dale St. corner.
• New Exhibit Features: Green Ideas for Old Homes – energy and water savings, “green” building materials, native landscape and garden designs.
• Arts Features: Arts and crafts by local artisans of The Handmade Revolution, antique furniture restoration, pottery exhibition at Studio Maureen, jewelry and home accessories. Plus arts and crafts for kids at the Kids’ Corner.
