Barbecue is primitive cooking at its best. And good barbecue is pure heaven - I've tried my share of Austin's famous barbecue and Lambert's serves up a smoky slab of ultimate heaven. Plain and simple. Everyone who loves barbecued meat has a favorite joint, and you are not going to convince them otherwise. Me? I'm a big fan of Phil's BBQ in the Sports Arena district, but I'm sure the guy down the street will think I'm a philistine. To each his own, right? Which means the fifth annual Smokin' in the Park BBQ Event at Viejas on Saturday, Oct. 17 is the perfect place for barbecue lovers.

Smokin' in the Park is an annual event that brings together the state's best barbecue teams who cook up their award-winning food for thousands of barbecue enthusiasts in and around the Viejas Casino and Outlet Center. The event also includes a line up of music on two stages, vendors, merchandise and more. Admission to the event is free. Plates of barbecue are sold directly from the participating vendors. In addition, you can participate in the People's Choice Award by sampling and voting for championship BBQ from the participating teams (five 2 oz. samples for $10).

This is one of the area’s best events of the year. Spend the entire day at Viejas and not drop one dime (unless I sneak a quick visit to the casino and try my luck at a few slots, which I like) — great music, lots to see and do…and, of course, the best BBQ in the entire U.S. Our favorite part is visiting all the BBQ teams. You get to see them right up close and see how they do it…talk to them and sample lots and LOTS of BBQ. Ahhh. Can’t wait.
