Adam Lambert's AMA Performance: Controversial or Just Contrived?

Follow me on:

So, San Diego's favorite American Idol, Adam Lambert, has been all over the news after his flamboyantly raunchy performance during Sunday's televised American Music Awards on ABC. So provocative that the network edited out portions of his performance when the show was broadcast on the West Coast.

It was his first major performance since releasing his debut album, "For Your Entertainment," and the former San Diego resident didn't disappoint in his promise to push the envelope, as the gay pop singer overshadowed performances by Whitney Houston, Jennifer Lopez and Rhianna.

As reported in the Union-Tribune as well as virtually every other news outlet, the controversy caused some fallout, as ABC's "Good Morning America" canceled a scheduled appearance by Lambert (of course, competing CBS' "The Early Show" snatched him right up for their broadcast). The uproar stems from Lambert's simulation of fellatio with a dancer and kissing a keyboard player - both males. Oh, and he also flipped the bird to the audience. Nice way to dis your pre-teen and mother fan base.

But was Lambert's performance all that controversial (ABC received only around1,500 complaints during the broadcast)? Or was it more contrived, planned to create a buzz around a self-proclaimed outrageously flamboyant performer who is trying to sell albums taking advantage of the old adage, "Any publicity is good publicity?"

Gary Bongiovanni, editor of Pollstar, the concert industry's leading trade publication, said Lambert should still be worried about his performance -- not because it was provocative, but because it wasn't very good.

"He tried to do too much too soon, and he's not experienced enough to pull it off," Bongiovanni said. "He didn't help his cause by doing something that was less than spectacular. And it was so uneven, not even the shock value was all that great."

In the end, it won't really matter if Lambert can't back it up with true artistry. Will he become the next Kelly Clarkson or another Taylor Hicks? Only time will tell.

I think he’ll actually be the first Adam Lambert. It’s a wild ride being an Adam fan, but I think it’s worth it.

America, San Diego & LA should be SOOOO proud of this young man and his exceptional vocals, performing talent & charisma! Already now he has inspired so many people all around the world, including us up here in the outskirts of Northern Europe! It’s about time someone shook up the double standards prevailing in your country! And by the way, Adam was fully clothed (unlike most female performers) in AMA show, in fact he was one of the best dressed performers BOTH on and off the stage! The so called “lewd scenes” lasted a few seconds, the same kind of “simulated acts” we have had in front of our eyes both on national and cable TV for years (music videos, reality shows etc). Adam’s PERFORMANCE was ONCE-IN-A-LIFETIME-EXPERIENCE, especially to him and his crew! So please, stop already with these negative and double standard supporting comments! Like so many have said before us: Adam is beautiful inside & out, his voice (vocal skills & range) and stage presence is something younger people have not experienced ever and “us oldies” not since the 70’s!!! So all the best, Adam – Keep on Rocking & Shocking us also in the future!!!
