At Last! City Breaks Ground on New Central Library

By , About.com Guide   July 29, 2010

Follow me on:

To be honest, I had pretty much given up hope on the city getting its act together to build its much-needed central library. But lo and behold, after some 30 years of the project being on the boards and even actual plans in hand, San Diego finally has broken ground on a new central library to be built in East Village adjacent to Petco Park.

You know, my believe as a city resident is, a new,  functional and welcoming central library is one of the few public projects (football stadium notwithstanding) that is worth taking on, even with San Diego's current budgetary challenges. Spend some time in a public library and you will see how much the public needs, enjoys and engages in books and what a library has to offer for years and years And a first-class library will give the city something to be proud of.

Whether the project will actually be completed is still in question, but at least the shovels - albeit ceremonial - have broken ground.

Read about the library ground-breaking in the Union-Tribune article here.
