Besides ghosts, goblins, witches, zombies and French maids, spiders are required staples of Halloween spookiness. And even though lots of people are creeped out by spiders and their ilk, those crawly things are quite beneficial to us. And that's what the San Diego Zoo Safari Park (formerly the Wild Animal Park) wants to teach us at the Creepy Crawly Festival. The San Diego Zoo Safari Park's Creepy Crawly Festival runs on Saturdays and Sundays from October 23 through November 14, plus Thursday, November 11 (Veteran's Day). The event is free with admission.
Spooky to some folks, fascinating to others, critters that creep and crawl their way through life help keep ecosystems healthy--whether we're aware of it or not. It's time to get to know them better and celebrate their amazing approaches to survival. Each weekend, you're invited to "Creepy Crawl this way" from one family-oriented activity to another, such as:
- Sit back and marvel at the incredible invertebrates featured in the Biggest, Baddest, Bug Show, 10:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.
- Howl in harmony during a Sing-along with Wild Wes, hourly from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. After the audience has learned a special song, Wes will lead everyone in a tuneful parade to the Webbed Walkway.
- Not everything that crawls is creepy--who doesn't love ladybugs? Join in the Ladybug Release so these helpful beetles can prey on plant pests like aphids. Hourly from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
- Prowl the Webbed Walkway and investigate exhibits containing scorpions, tarantulas, and spiders. Discover the beauty (really!) and fascinating facts about these misunderstood creatures.
- Make a Creepy Craft, check out our Cockroach Petting Zoo, and try some Bug Eating, all from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
- Take in a Bird and Bug Feeding Demonstration at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.
- Listen to a Fun with Bugs Talk at 12:30 and 3:30 p.m.
- Explore the Creepy Crawly Crevasse, home to many interesting insects.
Got an adventurous appetite? Like to have fun with food? Try some of these Eerie Edibles:
