San Diego's South Park neighborhood often gets lumped together with its neighbors, Golden Hill and North Park. But though proximity often blurs the actual borders between enclaves, South Park has a flavor and personality of its own. A big part of South Park's personality is its preservation of the original homes in the neighborhood. Many are Victorian or Craftsman homes built in the early 1900s.
Homes like these lend invaluable character to South Park, but their age obviously requires lots of care to restore them to their original glory. The South Park Old House Fair is an annual event that celebrates and honors the heritage of these old homes and it helps to educate other homeowners to find the resources to refurbish and restore their own homes. The 2011 event takes place on Saturday, June 18 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The Old House Fair features a self-guided home tour, walking tours, half-hour design consultations, live music, children's activities, food vendors, local artists and restoration experts. The fair itself is free, but there self-guided walking tour costs $20. The fair takes place along two blocks at the intersection of Beech St. & 30th St. in South Park and includes:
- Tours galore ... from the Historic Homes Tour to a walking tour of South Park, to a Trolley Ride throughout the community.
- Exhibits featuring craftsmen, contractors, shops and services that answer all your questions about enjoying your old home.
- Lively music, entertainment, and festive food.
- Arts and crafts for kids and the young-at-heart.
- Free bike corral, pet adoption corner, self-guided Bike/WalkTour of Historic Homes.
- NEW! The "Green Machine" comes to Beech St
