Tiger Tackles Torrey Pines

Woods defends his title at the Buick Invitational

Feb 11 2004
Each year, the PGA Tour makes a stop in San Diego during the West Coast swing that starts the golf season. And though the Buick Invitational (Feb. 9-15) has always been a popular tournament because Torrey Pines is such an inviting venue (and one of the great muni courses anywhere), the tournament and golf course has been elevated to a whole new level and importance for one simple - but very big - reason: Tiger.

You see, it's well-known since Tiger Woods has cemented himself as the world's best golfer and arguably the most popular sports figure on the planet that he is very selective in which PGA tournaments he commits himself to play, especially early in the season. With his focus on gearing up for the four Majors and the demand for his presence, Woods can't possibly play every tournament - he skipped the prestigious ATT Pebble Beach and often passes on next week's Nissan Open in LA.

Fortunately, Woods has a lucrative contract with Buick, so he has a corporate sense of obligation to appear at the Buick Invitational. But Tiger also has a long history and affinity for the Torrey Pines Golf Course, having played the courses since he was dominating Southern California Junior Golf. So, call us lucky.

So, once again, all eyes will be on San Diego and Torrey Pines as the world watches Woods attempt to repeat the title he won in 2003. And though he won five times during his trek to Player of the Year honors, many considered Woods' season subpar because he didn't win a major. Such are the expectations of the most talented golfer in the world.

With Pebble Beach winner Vijay Singh already making a strong bid to become Tiger's main rival, and Phil Mickelson bouncing back strong after a disappointing 2003, this year's Buick Invitational should make for intriguing golf drama.

Couple the great field with the spectacular venue of Torrey Pines North and South Courses, the added teeth of the Rees Jones re-designed South Course, and the promise of absolutely spectacular weather broadcast nationally on CBS and you'll understand why it's hell to get a tee time on Torrey and why everyone wants to move here. But it should make for some great golf.
