Holy Guacamole! San Diego is Avocado Country

San Diego is Avocado Capital:

Did you know California is the nation's largest producer of avocados, and San Diego County is the capital? In fact, San Diego County produces over 40 percent of the California avocado crop, which in turn produces 95 percent of the nation's avocados.

Green Gold:

There are seven varieties of avocados: Hass, Bacon, Zutano, Gwen, Pinkerton, Fuerte, Reed. However, the popular Hass (rhymes with "pass" variety accounts for 85 percent of California's avocado crop volume.

Perfect weather, of course:

Because of its mild climate, California is able to grow avocados year round.

Fat is good:

Avocados contain 5 grams of fat per serving.

Prodigious producers:

A single avocado tree can produce up to 400 fruit a year

Super Snack:

According to the California Avocado Commission, an estimated 40 million pounds of avocado was consumed on Super Bowl Sunday, mostly in the form of guacamole.

Important crop:

There are approximately 6,000 growers in California.
