Everyone is familiar with the classic Dr. Seuss story and the TV cartoon that airs every year. In 1998, the famed Old Globe Theatre first staged this musical production based on the book as a holiday gift to San Diego, with the blessing of Dr. Seuss' widow, Audrey Geisel, a longtime La Jolla resident.

Its critical and popular success was such that the Jack O'Brien production in only five years has become an annual Christmas tradition -- a holiday gift to the city. And each year, the Old Globe stage makes an amazing transformation into a real-life Dr. Seuss page. Whoville never looked so real as it does in this production.

Not to be confused with the Hollywood film starring Jim Carrey, with book and lyrics by Timothy Mason, music by Mel Marvin and direction by Globe Artistic Director and traveling wizard Jack O'Brien, "Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas" stars Guy Paul as the mean old green grinch who, through the sheer goodness of the people of Whoville, becomes transformed into a believer of Christmas cheer. The musical includes an adult and child ensemble cast who bring all the familiar Seuss characters to life on stage.

The scenic design by John Lee Beatty are a sight to behold, as are the costumes by Robert Morgan. Between it all, How the Grinch Stole Christmas is a wonderful way to get into the holiday spirit in a truly original way. Not only is it a San Diego holiday tradition, but something we can call our very own.

Tip: Buy your tickets early. Performances sell out quickly.
