Holy Guacamole! San Diego is Avocado Country

Did you know California is the nation's largest producer of avocados, and San Diego County is the capital? In fact, San Diego County produces over 40 percent of the California avocado crop, which in turn produces 95 percent of the nation's avocados.

Other avocado facts:

  • There are seven varieties of avocados: Hass, Bacon, Zutano, Gwen, Pinkerton, Fuerte, Reed. However, the popular Hass (rhymes with "pass" variety accounts for 85 percent of California's avocado crop volume.
  • Because of its mild climate, California is able to grow avocados year round.
  • Avocados contain 5 grams of fat per serving
  • A single avocado tree can produce up to 400 fruit a year
  • According to the California Avocado Commission, an estimated 40 million pounds of avocado was consumed on Super Bowl Sunday, mostly in the form of guacamole.
  • There are approximately 6,000 growers in California.
