Halloween festivities are fun for children and adults, but at Halloween there are lost of unfamiliar activities, people and noises that can upset your pet. So the the San Diego Humane Society is reminding animal owners that Halloween scares can be spooky for your pets. The following tips can keep your pet safe this holiday and protect your pet from the scary sights and sounds of Halloween.

Here are six tips to keep pets safe and happy this Halloween.

About the San Diego Humane Society and SPCA:

Serving San Diego County since 1880, the San Diego Humane Society and SPCA provides vital services to animals and people alike through sheltering and adopting animals, providing positive reinforcement behavior training for adoptable animals and for owned animals through public training classes, investigating animal cruelty and neglect, providing adult and youth education programs, sharing animals through pet-assisted therapy and rescuing animals in emergency situations.

A private nonprofit organization that receives no public or government funding, the San Diego Humane Society and SPCA is supported solely by contributions, grants, bequests, investments, proceeds from the Humane Society’s retail store, Muttique, and some fees for service.

Stay In

Keep pets inside away from trick-or-treaters and other Halloween activities. To reduce stress levels, keep pets in an enclosed room with their favorite toys and with the television or radio on.

Doorbell Damage Control

Excessive ringing of the doorbell can make some dogs bark and raise their stress level. Consider leaving a note on your door that asks trick-or-treaters to lightly knock rather than ring the doorbell.

Keep Sweets Out of Reach!

Chocolate and other ingredients can be toxic to animals, so keep it somewhere that they won't be able to get into it. Also, be mindful of candy wrappers and foil - they can be a choking hazard to animals.

Costumes Are Not For Everyone

Animals look cute in costumes, but that doesn't necessarily mean they like it! Don't make your pet wear a costume unless you're sure they love it. A simple Halloween bandana can be a more comfortable alternative to a full costume.

Use Caution with Halloween Decor

Keep jack-o-lanterns with flames out of reach of your pets. Or, only use flameless candles to prevent curious pets from getting burned. Use caution with fake cobwebs and other decorations that could be a choking hazard for your pet.

ID Your Pet

Make sure that all of your pets are wearing tags with current ID. Opening the door repeatedly for trick-or-treaters creates plenty of escape opportunities. If your pet does go missing, an ID will help ensure a quick reunion. Contact your local shelter immediately if your pet is missing (for the cities of Oceanside and Vista, the San Diego Humane Society, North Campus handles lost and found pets).
