What It Is:
You always know when a dive bar gains street cred when the hipsters co-opt it as one of their own. And the Alibi in Hillcrest is one of those places. The Alibi claims it is one of the oldest bars in town, and I don't dispute that.
Dive Factor:
When you see the sign at the corner of University and Richmond, you'll understand. It's not fancy, has been here forever, and it's not a gay bar (it is Hillcrest, after all). Inside, it's dark, with a few pool tables, but nothing special.
What Makes It So Cool?:
Heck, what better name for a bar than the Alibi? Like the best dive bars, it doesn't try to be anything other than what it is. Of course, the hipster crowd has adopted it as a cool hangout, so now it's one the radar of places to be seen. But hit it during the day - you'll get the vibe.
Drink Factor:
The Alibi opens at 8 a.m. and has Happy Hour all day until 6 p.m. Oh, and don't forget their famous $3 Big Dipper Bud draft - 23 ounces of liquid lunch.
Food Factor:
Basic fare - there are plenty of better eats on the same block
Music Factor:
Good jukebox selection, and live bands on Saturday nights, which makes for a cramped experience.
Your Guide's Take:
The Alibi used to be a scary place (well, OK, it appeared to be a scary place to some), but recent cosmetic changes (windows!) made it more friendly, and the cool crowd has discovered and adopted it. Plus, if you're not comfortable with the gay bar scene, this is your sanctuary in Hillcrest.
