What It Is:
The Ken Club (as it is commonly known) is an institution in one of the most highly desirable of the "sign" neighborhoods, Kensington. It is a classic neighborhood bar: long, dark and narrow, with an original neon sign. You'd miss it if you weren't looking for it.
Dive Factor:
Long, dark and narrow. The Ken Club has two personalities: during the day, it's a barfly hangout, where you wonder, "Do these people work?" Then you realize you're in there drinking, too. At night, it transforms into a hipster nightclub, with music in the adjoining space.
What Makes It So Cool?:
For one, the Kensington business district on Adams Ave. is one of those little two-block sections in a neighborhood full of personality. With one of San Diego's last remaining single screen cinemas, the Ken Cinema, next door (an art house at that), this is one of those areas where you say, "I could live here." And it you want a drink, well, that's where the Ken Club comes in.
Drink Factor:
Full bar, usually accommodating bartenders.
Food Factor:
Not really - they might offer some bags of chips or something out of the microwave. But if you're hungry, head down the block to Ponce's for cheap Mexican food.
Music Factor:
Pretty good jukebox selection. But it's the adjoining space where the hipsters get into the music: DJs and live bands, including local regulars Deadbolt can be heard here.
Your Guide's Take:
The Ken Club has been one of my favorite neighborhood haunts since I was in college. It's a classic bar where you just duck in for a cocktail during the day and you immediately feel at home. They've been doing it since 1936, and it shows. Neighborhood regulars hit it during the day and early evening. Later, the hipsters occupy it for the music and vibe. It may be off the main, but it's a great little gem to call your own.
