The San Diego Civic Theatre has been an entertainment staple in downtown San Diego for decades. Every year it gets some of the best Broadway shows, top comedic acts, ballet performances and other popular shows. 2014 is also destined to be a great year with new and returning acts coming to the stage. Here are some of the most highly anticipated shows coming to the Civic Theatre in 2014.
A Prairie Home Companion – Garrison Keillor himself brings the beloved tales of A Prairie Home Companion to San Diego for a live radio performance of the iconic show.

Beauty and the Beast – Fans of the Disney movie, Beauty and the Beast, will enjoy watching this musical that tells the story of Belle and her fateful meeting with the Beast and the rest of the magical characters of the enchanted castle. The popular songs from the movie are performed along entertaining dance numbers.

Pagliacci by Ruggero Leoncavallo – Clowns, love and murder take center stage in this vivid opera, which will be presented by the San Diego Opera at the Civic Theatre.

The Elixir of Love by Gaetano Donizetti – The Elixir of Love is a comedic opera with a love story woven through it that gets help from a possible love potion. Put on by the San Diego Opera, the story comes to life in 2014 at the San Diego Civic Theatre.

A Masked Ball by Giuseppe Verdi – A Masked Ball is a beautiful Italian opera that will be performed by the San Diego Opera. The opera tells the story of a dramatic love triangle between Count Anckarström and his wife and King Gustav III of Sweden.

Don Quixote by Jules Massenet – Don Quixote by Jules Massenet has been performed around the world since 1910 and this performance will be sung by the San Diego Opera. It takes place in Spain and tells the tale of a knight and Dulcinea, the beauty he’s trying to impress.
Performance Dates: April 4, April 5, April 8 and April 11
Sleeping Beauty – The California Ballet will be performing the classic fairy tale story of Sleeping Beauty at the Civic Theatre in 2014 and will make for an excellent family-friendly outing. Both children and adults will delight in the music and beautiful dancing as the story of Sleeping Beauty is brought to life.

The Book of Mormon – A comedic musical by the creators of South Park, The Book of Mormon is religious satire that follows two young missionaries who are in Uganda to share the Book of Mormon with locals. The Book of Mormon has been awarded the Tony Award for Best Musical. Parents should note it isn't considered to be suitable for children.
Performance Dates: May 27 – June 8
Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat – This musical has been a staple on the Broadway scene for many years and returns to San Diego to delight new viewers and repeat attendees. To a soundtrack created by Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber, the musical tells the biblical story of Joseph and a very special coat.
Performance Dates: June 24 – June 29
Once – This Irish musical won eight 2012 Tony Awards and is based on an award-winning 2006 movie of the same name. Set in Dublin, it follows the love story of two struggling musicians and features singing and instrument playing onstage.
Performance Dates: August 11 – August 17, 2014
