1. Del Mar Rod & Custom Nationals - April 3 & 4

On the heels of gear head shows like Monster Garage and American Hot Rod, the Del Mar Rod & Custom National showcases thousands of customized hot rods, street rods and classic cars through 1972. At the Del Mar Fairgrounds. Adults $15.

2. Butterflies and Orchids - April 3-18

The annual event at the San Diego Zoo's Wild Animal Park lets you experience the wonder of butterflies up close at the Park's Hidden Jungle exhibit. Wear colorful clothing and let the butterflies flutter onto you. Then, take in the breathtaking varieties of colorful and exotic orchids displayed throughout Nairobi Village. Included with Park admission.

3. Padres Season Opener - April 8

The Padres play their official home opener at downtown's brand-new Petco Park vs. the San Francisco Giants. The series continues through April 11.

4. Nickel Creek - April 8

San Diego County's own Nickel Creek headlines at UCSD's Rimac Arena. The young trio has taken bluegrass and country music by storm - and rightly so. These three members are fantastic musicians, especially mandolin wiz Chris Thile.

5. Cirque du Soleil - through April 18

Cirque du Soleil's fantastic "Varekai" continues its run at Qualcomm Stadium.
