Top 5 Best Bets for the Week of March 1-7, 2004

By Inigo Figuracion, About.com

Britney Spears is in town...what more can I say? But there are other things to do in town this week. Here are my best bets for the week.

1. Britney Spears - March 2

The reigning Queen of Pop bumps and grinds and lip synchs her way to the Sports Arena. It surely will be a spectacle...and there might even be some real singing! See her before she becomes just another pop culture footnote. 7:30 p.m.

2. Petco Park Open House - March 6-7

It's the public's first chance to see the brand spankin new downtown ballpark, Petco Park. The Padres are opening up the ballpark to the public for the first time to take self-guided tours of the ballpark. And the price is right, too: just donate a canned good, suitable for humans or...pets, of course.

3. Ocean Beach Kite Festival

The festival is one of the longest running annual events in San Diego (this is the 54th), and is the second oldest annual kite festival in the United States. The Kiwanis Club provides materials for the kids to make kites, then comes judging, and then a parade through downtown OB. It's great family fun.

4. Ruben Studdard - March 3

Lest we all forget, it was Ruben and not Clay Aiken who won last season's American Idol. In any case, for those Idol fanatics who must, Ruben will perform at the Spreckels Theater downtown.

5. Buddy Guy - March 5

He's one of the greatest blues guitarists ever, and is revered by such rock legends as Eric Clapton, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Jimi Hendrix and Keith Richards. And I can say I've met Buddy Guy in person at his club in Chicago. His show at the East County Performing Arts Center is supposedly going to be an acoustic show, which should be something.
