Where to Dine in San Diego: Hillcrest

Khyber Pass

These days, the only thing we associate with Afghanistan is the ongoing war tearing through the country. But it may be a surprise that it's the origin of some tasty dishes as well. Khyber Pass serves up the favorite dishes from the Near East, Turkey, Afghanistan and India presented in a chic colorful ambiance. Enjoy the healthy, fresh ingredients blended with exotic spices created to excite your senses. The Nasery family opened the Khyber Pass Restaurant over 16 years ago after coming to the United States to escape the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan.

La Posta

Every neighborhood has to have a taco shack, and Hillcrest has many, but one of the favorites is La Posta. If you're not looking for it, you'd probably miss it. Unless you're driving around late at night, looking for a place to get a carne asada burrito. Then you'll notice La Posta because there is always a late-night crowd seeking to satiate their after-hours munchies.

Busalacchi's Ristorante

The Busalacchi family is the first family of Italian eateries in San Diego, with seven restaurants around the city.  And Busalacchi's Ristorante is the flagship dining room. Old school traditional Italian fine dining and service is what you'll find at Busalacchi's. It ain't a pizzeria - or Olive Garden, for that matter - but it ain't too pricey either.

City Delicatessen & Bakery

Back in my college days, if it was late in the evening and you wanted something to eat in Hillcrest and you didn't want Jimmy Wong's Chinese food, then we headed to City Deli. Boy, how things have changed. But the City Deli is still around. Since its beginning in 1984, City Deli has prided itself on food made from scratch. Now, if you're expecting a real Jewish deli, City Deli isn't it. But if you need some decent diner food, this is the place.

Terra Restaurant

Terra is tucked away in the Uptown Retail District in Hillcrest. But it's worth seeking out because it's a relaxed casual eatery serving up some interesting dishes. Terra specializes in "The America's" cuisine and celebrates the best the ingredients earth can offer. Its seasonal menu reflects its ties to the freshest local & regional products available. Using the finest and freshest ingredients with the most unique presentation.

Amarin Thai

Thai restaurants are like taco joints - everyone has their favorite one. Amarin Thai is a favorite of a lot of people and its not the most obvious, situated on a side street in Hillcrest. But it serves up some authentic, fresh Thai food at very good prices. What more can you ask?

La Pizzeria Arrivederci

La Pizzeria Arrivederci is one of those places to go if you feel like pizza or straightforward Italian food and want to feel cool in an urban setting. Thin crust pizza, spaghetti bolognese, good wine - it's a good place to spend a leisurely meal when you don't have to be anywhere right away.

The Wit's End

I used to go to the Wit's End for lunch when I worked in the neighborhood because the soup was very good. And this little hole-in-the-wall cafe and pub is so unassuming that when you find it, you feel like you've discovered your own favorite spot to drop in for some brew and food.

St. Tropez Bakery & Bistro

St. Tropez has one of those great locations smack in the middle of Hillcrest on Fifth Avenue. Casual crepes, quiches, sandwiches and salads give St. Tropez a bit of a Euro flair.
