Poinsettia Bowl

For a fledgling bowl game, this one has hit a home run, to mix metaphors, in only its fourth year of existence. The Poinsettia Bowl just might have one of the best non-BCS matchups in the 2008-9 bowl game season - undefeated Boise State (12-0) vs. Texas Christian University (10-2). The matchup might even be better than its bigger San Diego brother, the more established Holiday Bowl, which has Oregon vs. Oklahoma State.

The Poinsettia Bowl returns for its fourth year on Dec. 23 at 5 pm (ESPN)and is sponsored by the San Diego County Credit Union. The moniker is named for those lovely red holiday flowers, the poinsettia, that are largely grown here in San Diego County.

The Boise State Broncos, guided by Head Coach Chris Petersen, finished 2008 with a perfect 12-0 regular season record for the second time in just three seasons. In 2006 they capped an undefeated season with a thrilling 43-42 victory over the Oklahoma Sooners in the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl. This is Boise State’s first appearance in the Poinsettia Bowl.

Boise State’s offense is led by freshman sensation Kellen Moore. The quarterback threw for 25 touchdowns and averaged 272.0 passing yards per game.

The TCU Horned Frogs return to the Poinsettia Bowl for the second time in three years. In 2006 the Horned Frogs routed the Northern Illinois Huskies 37-7. Coach Gary Patterson’s team finished the regular season with a 10-2 overall record, 7-1 in the Mountain West Conference.

A well balanced TCU offensive attack is guided by sophomore quarterback Andy Dalton. Dalton threw for 11 touchdowns against just four interceptions in ten games. His passer rating for the season was an impressive 132.4.

Tickets for the 2008 San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl can be purchased by calling TicketMaster at 619-220-TIXS (8497), or by visiting www.PoinsettiaBowl.net.
