A notable presence in competitive synchronized swimming, Abel was the only athlete to qualify for both the junior and senior national teams in 2006. At the Junior National Championships that year, she swept all three events, placing first in the solo, duet and team. In 2007 she and the national team placed fifth overall at Worlds, and Abel also received a nomination to the Pan-American team.

Layne Beaubien plays a vital role on both ends of the pool. On the offensive end, he serves as the water polo equivalent of the point guard, positioning himself centrally furthest away from the goal. Much like the point guard, he helps set up the offense. On the defensive end, he uses his size, strength and long wingspan to neutralize the opposing team's center in front of the net, steal passes and block shots. As a two-meter defender, Beaubien is usually in the middle of the physical (sometimes bordering on brutal) action that characterizes water polo.

Kyle Bennett trained for BMX (bicycle moto-cross) at Chula Vista's Olympic Training Center. Bennett has won three world championships in BMX, three NBL #1 Pro Plates, and has twice finished in second place at the X Games, making him one of the favorites to take home a medal from Beijing.

Both making their first Olympic appearance, Biehl and McNay have been sailing together since 2005. That year they placed third at the Miami OCR and have sailed well since. In 2007 they placed tenth at Worlds and eighth and the Sydney International Regatta. Biehl grew up with a piece of the Olympics close to home. His uncle is three-time Olympic medalist Mark Reynolds. Superior helmsman in the Star class, Reynolds took home the silver in 1988 and the gold in both 1992 and 2000.

Rachel Buehler made her national team debut at the 2008 Algarve Cup. In her first match, the 22-year-old defender played all 90 minutes and helped the U.S. preserve a clean sheet against China. In all, she appeared in all four matches in Portugal and did not witness a backward goal in 229 minutes of playing time. By the end of the Peace Queen Cup in June, she had ten national team caps to her credit.

Campbell comes from a family of sailors: His parents met through sailing, and his father is a four-time All-American and winner of the 1992 America's cup.

Philip Dunn will represent the United States at the Olympics for the third time in his career this summer in Beijing, where he will look to contend for a medal in the men's 50km race walk. In February, Dunn won the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team Trials 50 km race walk in convincing fashion, crossing the line in 4 hours 12 minutes 55 seconds, winning by a margin of nearly 2 ½ minutes.
